“I believe it’s quite an enticing offer compared to your previous rate…”
I stared back at the CEO and quietly nodded my head—trying to keep cool.
3+ years with this company… I’m about to quit my full-time job.
“I’ll have to think about it.” I replied.
Double my salary?? Wow… That’s SO much MONEY. I can finally buy that drone I always wanted…or go on a Caribbean cruise!
I started imagining my life with double the luxuries.
Forget one steak… how about TWO! Actually… I’d love a side of fries, and while you’re at it an extra order of TRUFFLES please.
It wasn’t until a week of deep thinking that I decided not to take the money.
See the thing is..
The moment you decide to commit to something… suddenly, everything else POPS out at you.
I call it the Potato Chip effect. 🍟
Like how on the first day of a diet…
You notice all the delicious sugary donuts on sale.
You suddenly have a craving for pizza.
And you desperately want that one bite of sour cream & onion potato chips.
and everything but your main goal suddenly becomes much much more important.
It’s temptation at its worse.
So how can we combat this?
The best decisions you’ll ever make are when you say NO.
Rejection isn’t easy.
Especially when you’re the one doing it.
But here’s the rub…
It’s not the opportunities or offers you accept that will change your life.
It’s the bad decisions, misaligned detours, and time-killing choices you AVOID that will impact you the most.
Because when you say NO to something, you’re really saying YES to what your priorities are.
When I got offered double my salary to stay… it took me an ENTIRE week to think deeply about what I truly wanted.
That’s when I discovered the solution…
How to beat the Potato Chip effect with one simple question
In Bumpers by Nic Peterson he says…
“Any time we can ask one question that answers thousands of other questions we have become more efficient decision makers.”
THIS is how you beat temptation.
Call it a North Star, The One True Question, or Guiding principles…
but whatever it is, it must be dead simple to answer.
When you answer… it should almost be a gut reaction, because you’ll instinctively know the conclusion.
and in my case… I asked myself…
“Will taking on this job get me one step closer to launching my own business?”
No? Reject the offer.
Yes? Accept.
