Ever heard of that story of the kid who's too afraid to jump into the pool?
He's standing on the edge of the diving board, looking down at the water and he's thinking to himself...
"Should I do it?
What if I can't swim?
What if I jump in and then I can't get back out?"
His mind is racing with all of these what if's and he's getting more and more worked up.
He's losing control.
Then some old fart who's been watching him from the sidelines yells out...
"Hey kid, it's now or never!"
Okay. PAUSE.
There's a huge problem with this.
If you're like me...I used to think that Now or Never meant:
If I don't do this now, I'll never get another chance.
If I don't do this now, I'm going to miss out on something great.
Here's the thing...
Neither of those interpretations are true.
and they BOTH give you ZERO control over your situation.
The first interpretation is just plain wrong. You'll ALWAYS have another chance.
And the second one? That's called FOMO - Fear Of Missing Out.
And it's this whole idea of "missing great opportunities" that has us all worked up into a frenzy.
I have to do this now or I'll die regretting it!
I have to buy this on sale now or it'll be gone forever! (This happened to me on Amazon prime day last week)
I have to go on this trip now or I'll never get another chance!"
No no no.
Stop the madness.
Every “Now or Never situation” is not some life-altering, YOLO moment where you're about to miss out on some crazy opportunity and you'll regret it for the rest of your life.
Now or never is really about making a decision.
IF you take away the FOMO and the pressure of "missing out" and think about it like this instead...
Now or never is not about missed opportunities at all.
It's about learning to live in the present moment through choice.
To really understand this:
Let's break down the phrase "Now or never".
Now = at the present time or moment. Not the past filled with regrets and not the future with all of its what-ifs. Just the present moment.
Or = This is a choice.
Never = at no time in the past or future; on no occasion; not ever.
What do you notice about the word Never?
Never sounds VERY similar to Now.
"At no time in the past or future." This implies the present moment.
Except there's one slight difference. "at no time" signals there's an absence.
A nothingness. A blank.
When you choose NEVER you're releasing yourself from desire.
You're saying "I don't want this now and I'm okay with it."
You're making a choice to be content with what you have and not what you think you should have.
🏊♂️Jump into the pool? It's "Now or Never"... meaning you can do the action in the NOW... or release the desire to dive into the pool.
✍️Start publishing online? It's "Now or Never... meaning you can write NOW... or release the want or need to become a writer.
So the next time you're staring down a decision...
And some old fart yells out "Hey kid, it's now or never!"
Just ask yourself...
Are you putting pressure on yourself to do something you're not ready for?
Or are you simply making a choice in the present moment?
Then go ahead and do what feels right.
See you next week,
Brian "Now or Never" To
P.S. I got this idea from reading one of Lukas Resheske’s FB posts.
