Last week, I went out for dinner at my favorite chicken joint.
Picture this.
We pulled up to the parking lot…
And I could smell the finger licking crispy goodness wafting through the air like a sirens call beckoning me to come closer.
I was readyyyy.
My excitement was soaring to new heights…
My heart started pumping like a crack addict about to get his next fix…
And when I jumped out of the passenger seat…
*SPLAT*
I felt a gooey white liquid crawl down my arm.
what. the. DUCK.
a huge honking chunk of bird shit landed right on ME. 🐔
I was so shocked I didn’t know whether or not I was disappointed, angry, or delirious.
Maybe the avian gods did this to punish me for my fried chicken eating addiction?
Maybe the universe was giving me a sign?
or maybe I should’ve looked up before I got out of the car.
Here’s a photo Jen snapped of me right after:
After a minute of lamenting the sudden bird strike I started laughing uncontrollably.
And we started making jokes:
“At least it didn’t land on your head!”
“At least it didn’t land on your FACE!”
“Don’t worry in Vietnamese culture it means good luck will come!”
Here’s a picture of me after a few jokes:
I never thought I’d be drawing a life lesson from bird poop but here I am.
So, my dear readers, the moral of this messy tale is simple:
Life is full of unexpected surprises, and how we react to them can make all the difference. We can either let unfortunate circumstances define our mood and ruin our day, or we can choose to embrace the absurdity and find laughter in the most unlikely places.
And if you’re a creator?
Use it to make content. 🤣
Til’ next week,
Brian “Bird Strike” To
P.S. As an act of revenge, I ordered the largest box combo there was at the restaurant and ate an entire family of chickens. Yum.
Learn In Public 🔨
I’ve been taking two courses lately:
Newsletter Launch Pad by Louie Bacaj and Chris Wong as part of my Small Bets Membership
Infinite Possibilities by Sowmya Hariharan
Over the next couple of issues I’ll drop some knowledge in the learn in public module on what I gained from these two amazing courses.
One of my biggest goals this year is to become an even more successful creator— and this means getting better at writing my newsletter.
Generally, I want to answer one question:
Is it possible to build a successful creator business purely through newsletters?
I’ve been weening away from social media more, and I want to look at more sustainable alternatives for interacting with my community.
What do you think?
Is it possible to build a business only through a newsletter?

I recently signed up for a subscription to Mid Journey and I’m LOVING it.
The only problem is… creating AI image prompts from scratch is a huge learning curve.
That’s why I use this prompt builder to construct all my AI images.👈
It’s free, fast, and easy to use!
I loved this! Your picture captions were great! And you make a good point.
at least it was on the arm and not in the hair!
